Centuries before modern building materials existed, Japanese craftsmen discovered that charring timber with an open flame made it harder, insect-resistant, weather-proof, and built to outlast generations. They called the technique Shou Sugi Ban — and they used it to build temples and palaces that still stand today.
That's the philosophy behind every structure we build. We didn't name our company Forged Carbon by accident. Fire doesn't destroy this timber — it protects it. That's the standard we hold ourselves to on every build across Queensland.
The charring process creates a carbonised outer layer that repels moisture, prevents insect penetration, and resists the UV degradation that destroys conventional cladding within years. The result is a surface that weathers beautifully rather than deteriorating — deepening in character over time rather than fading and cracking.
In Queensland's climate — the UV intensity, the humidity cycles, the termite presence — Shou Sugi Ban isn't just aesthetically compelling. It's the most sensible exterior cladding decision you can make. Japanese builders understood this centuries ago. We think it's time Australia did too.
The Build Standard
The cladding philosophy extends to everything else we build. NCC Class 1A certification isn't a marketing point — it's a baseline commitment to the same structural, electrical, plumbing, and safety standards as any house on any street in Australia.
Engineer-certified steel frames. Bradford Gold insulation — R4.0 in the roof, R2.5 in the walls. Reverse Cycle × 1. Cedar-framed windows. BlueScope Colorbond roofing. These aren't upgrades. They're what every Forge 12 comes with, because they're what a permanent home requires.
The kitchen gets the same treatment. It's specified and fitted by Bilt & Co, our Rockhampton cabinetry partner — chosen because they hold their own joinery to a standard we recognise.
